Citizen Science Activity: Nature’s Notebook

  • Students will participate in world-wide observations and data collection on animal and plant behavior, structure and function so that any subtle adaptations to the changing climate can be documented and studied by scientists.

 

News from the Digital Den with Miss Stacey

 

Week 2 in Digital Den was so much fun! Ms.Stacey assessed the drag and drop skills of the younger campers with the use of Kodable. Campers learned how to load up the proper script in order to beat 3 different games. Though it felt like play, they were learning how to program games using code. Our more advanced coders learned how to set a background, choose a sprite and code it to move in Scratch. To reinforce our theme of locomotion, campers made the sprites fly, move forward ten steps and turn. Even though they all had the same challenge, our campers all coded very creative games and animations. Their coding skills will also be enriched in our robotics and in the science room with our new hydroponics units. We look forward to expanding our coding skills in the next 2 week curriculum blocks!

 

News from Robotics 1 with Juliana

 

Our science campers are officially coders! This week we introduced the Blockly App and they learned how to drag and drop different codes to program DASH to do what we want him to do! The campers created their own mazes and did an amazing job using trial and error to find the perfect code for their robots. This week we also used LEGO attachments to personalize their Dashes and I loved how creative they got with it! To end the week, we used the launcher attachment and had a fun basketball match which the kids loved! I am extremely impressed with our ESSK group and am thrilled that they are enjoying robotics so much!

 

News from Robotics 2 with Alan

 

Last week, the campers learned the basics of SnappyXO, electronics, and programming. For this week, the campers used their skills learned last week to put together a two-wheel drive robot or a walking robot. With the ultrasonic sensor, their robots were able to detect objects in front of it and avoid them. By working as a team on the robot car projects, the campers developed their teamwork skills, and they had a basic understanding of how a robot can get data from its surrounding environment and react to it. In addition, our campers learned the different types of locomotion by building and playing with their robot cars.

 

News from Engineering with Kyle

 

This week in Engineering class our students learned about energy transfer: how potential energy is converted to kinetic energy and what effect it will have on an object at rest. We made marble roller coasters where the students focused on maximizing the amount of potential energy they could get to ensure the marble would make it through loop de loops and corkscrews the students designed. Students were encouraged to test, improve upon and share design ideas with their classmates.

 

News from Science with Tina

 

This week in Science we continued our  Locomotion Commotion theme. The campers investigated the differences in the way liquids and solids move and tried to answer an age old question…is Oobleck a liquid or a solid??? We experimented with ways that kinetic energy can make something move and we continued to watch and care for our Space tomato plants. We also started a compost pile and are anxious to use it in our gardens. Everyone was excited to take our first Science trip this week to the Oyster Bay Waterfront.

 

News from Artistic Design with Jess

 

This week in Artistic Design, the campers explored the idea of locomotion and movement in a completely new way. The students dipped strings into paint, laid the string onto a paper forming a simple shape, and closed the paper and string into a book. Then they pulled the string out and opened the paper to reveal incredible designs showing the movement of the strings. Every time they pulled out a string, they discovered a new beautiful design that they created by chance.
