Check Out What’s New – HYDROPONICS!

Our new Hydroponics Greenhouse will give our students a hands-on experience to understand the method for growing plants without using soil.

It has always been Park Shore’s philosophy to create new and exciting programs to keep us on the cutting edge of the newest technology and educational programs in order to maintain our statement that we are the best at educating the “Future 21st Century Kids.”

We have expanded our Hydroponics unit to a dedicated free-standing greenhouse giving our students an even more hands-on experience that will give them more opportunities to understand how this process works.

Hydroponics is a method for growing plants without using soil. The nutrients that plants need to grow are put into water and then delivered to the roots of the plants. You might ask “How can plants can grow without soil?” We do know that plants need water, sunlight, carbon dioxide and minerals to grow. Normally they get water when it rains or when you water them. Sunlight is provided from the sky or artificial lights. Carbon Dioxide is in the air we breathe. Mineral nutrients needed by plants are often naturally present in the soil but can also be found in fertilizers. The soil itself is not really needed by the plants just the nutrients in it. So when the nutrients are put in the water the plants get what they need to grow and thrive.

What will we do with the plants we grow? We will transfer them to our outside garden, care for them, chart their progress and also supply food for our friends in the cave. I am very hopeful that we can even get some reluctant vegetable eaters to try what they have grown.

I am so excited to have the opportunity to give this experience to your children. I cannot wait to send you pictures and updates of our new Hydroponic Home.

Sincerely,

Dianne Vitucci

Education Director
