Dear Parents,

Happy Spring!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break and has been out and about enjoying the warmer weather!

This past month has been a lot of fun in the STEAM Science Center.  The children all enjoyed learning about static electricity and trying to get our balloons to stick to the wall by rubbing it on our hair.  We learned that hair gel definitely gets rid of static!!  We had a great time learning about the solar system and enjoyed mixing and painting with our very special moondust.

For Earth Day we talked about recycling and learned the different ways we can help our environment.  We made our very own coffee filter earth.  The children really seemed to understand how important reusing is and talked about how they recycle in their own homes.

There was evident delight when the classes all got to make their “garden” playdoh.  I hope you enjoyed the piece they brought home.  I am happy to report that most of the children enjoyed examining and touching our earth worms.  We learned just how very important the worms are to our soil and gardens.  Checking our worm habitats has become an enjoyable event.

We then went on to our planting units.  We enjoyed examining the plants and were able to name the parts of the plant.  We learned how some plants came from seeds and  some were able to self root.  Fortunately the weather cooperated and we were able to take it outside and plant some lovely flowers on the Park Shore grounds.  Each class was given their own space and a beautiful sign to show where they planted.  I hope you have the opportunity to walk around the grounds and admire your children’s hard work.

We had a new addition to our room this past month.  We have a new tadpole friend and are enjoying checking on him weekly to see if he has sprouted legs yet.  We talked a lot about metamorphosis and how it is simply transforming or changing.  I am happy to say they really seemed to understand the concept!!  We are also anxiously awaiting our butterflies emergence.

During our last weeks of school we are looking forward to releasing our butterflies after watching them grow from caterpillars.  We will also be making watercolors from flowers we pick on Park Shore grounds.

With a mind toward summer,  we will investigate seawater and how it differs from fresh water we drink.  We will learn about different ocean animals and how a starfish is actually a sea star.

We will make our very own homemade colored bubbles to use for our bubble/field day and create a foamy fountain.  Finally for our end of the finale we will make fireworks in a jar!!

As the school year begins to wind down and thoughts turn to pools and beaches, I want to take a moment to tell you how much I have enjoyed being with your children and watching them grow and learn.  We had many laughs and so much fun in science.  I will miss my friends that are moving on and look forward to seeing my friends continuing their Park Shore journey in the fall.  I look forward to seeing you at the Graduation ceremonies and hope you have a truly amazing summer!!  Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to spend the year with your children!

Fondly,

Miss Tina
