THE TOP THINGS TO ASK AND KNOW BEFORE SELECTING A SUMMER DAY CAMP

Camp Facilities and History:

• Select a day camp that has a current New York State Health Department Permit in good standing.
• Is the camp in good condition?  Or does it seem like it needs a lot of work?
• Does the camp have indoor facilities?
• How long has the camp been around?

Staff:

• Who is the camp Owner/Director? Are they involved in the day to day running of the camp?
• Who will be in charge of my child’s camp group?  
• How old is the staff?  
• What is the ratio of campers to counselors?
• What training do the staff receive?
• Is the Pool Staff Red Cross certified?

Camp Programs and Policies:

• What sessions and programs are offered?
• What ages does the camp offer programs for?
• What are the tuition rates, payment plans and camp policies?
• What is the camp’s visiting policy?
• How does the camp communicate with its families?

Activities:

• What is a typical camp day like?
• What activities are available?  
• Are there specialized programs?
• Are there qualified, well trained instructors?

Special Services:

• Does the camp have a hot lunch program?  Does the camp have refrigeration for the campers’ lunches brought from home?
• What medical facilities does the camp have?  Is there a registered nurse or equivalent at the camp?  How many?
• How does the camp handle allergies or special medical needs?
• What type of security does the camp have?

Special Concerns:

• What happens during a lightning storm?
• What safety procedures are followed?
• How will the camp contact you in case of an emergency?
• What happens on a rainy day or a very hot day?  
• Are there water fountains and bathroom facilities conveniently located around the camp?

Transportation:

• Does the camp provide transportation?  
• Who drives the buses?
• Do the drivers have a CDL (commercial driver’s license)?
• Do the buses have Bus Counselors?
• Are the buses inspected by the Department of Transportation?
