The summer started off bright and cheerful as you can see from our capillary action experiment. We started off by talking about how the rain infiltrates the soil and that roots need to absorb the water and transport it upward toward the leaves. The paper towels model the plant roots and with the mixing of the colors as seen in the picture shows the movement of the water as would occur through plant roots.
We then continued our journey up the plant modeling the xylem which transport the water upwards against gravity. The student campers demonstrated capillary action with different size straws, first different diameters then different lengths.   Ultimately the children were challenged to drink from a straw that was two stories tall.

As we look ahead we will be building our Peapod teepees so we can watch our pea plants grow throughout the summer and hopefully reach new heights.
